Key findings
In a global news index covering January 2019 to July 2026, waste management took 8.05 of every 10,000 news articles in 2019 and 6.66 in 2025, with a low of 5.73 in 2020, 28.8% below the 2019 level.
Basis: Annual waste management articles (101,095 in all) divided by all articles in the index for the same year, complete years 2019–2025.
Waste management coverage showed almost no seasonality between 2019 and 2025: the busiest month (March) held 8.96% of a typical year's articles and the quietest (November) 7.9%, against 8.33% for an even spread.
Basis: Within-year month shares averaged over the complete years 2019–2025 (measurement rule 6: within-year shares survive changes in outlet mix).

Basis: Top sentiment label of each article, grouped into negative, neutral and positive; 99.8% of sampled articles carry a label.
Machine-assigned editorial priority ratings placed 60.8% of waste management articles at critical priority (7 or higher on a 1–9 scale) between January 2023 and July 2026, 1.43 times the 42.6% share for all news.
Basis: Top priority label per article; critical = priority ≥ 7.
Landfill management and operations appeared in 10.39% of themed waste management articles between January 2023 and July 2026, 558.63 times its frequency in all themed news, and leachate management in 3.68%, 787.46 times its frequency.
